Yesterday before we went out to watch fireworks, I was flipping channels on the TV and came across an interesting show on the National Geographic Channel called America’s Wild Spaces. The episode I watched was about the Pacific Crest Trail. The film crew followed a handful of people on their journey to thru-hike from the southern point in California all the way to the northern tip of Washington. The PCT is a long journey (2,000 miles) and covers treacherous terrain, with the high point at some 13,000 ft in elevation.
Thru-hiking the PCT is no easy feat. One of the hikers the show featured had attempted several treks and even came within just 60 miles of the finish line when he was forced to stop his hike because of a fire along the trail. Another girl on the show made it 1,000 miles with 65 lbs on her back before she ran out of money and had to stop.
I found this video on the National Geographic website that shows a little bit more about the episode I watched. If you get this TV channel you should check it out:

Great find !
I’ve been thinking about a long term trip for a while…
But for me, it’s not the hardship of hiking or lack of finances that stops me from doing it. I am afraid that at some point in my journey, I’ll ask myself : ” Why the hell are you doing this ? ”
What if there is no “inner journey” ? What if you are doing this just so you can say “been there , done that ” ?
Try building yourself up… instead of doing a 4 month thru hike, try seeing how you like a 2 week hike .. then a 3 week hike … then a 4 week hike and go from there.
