When to Wear Hiking Boots?

New to the hiking scene and not sure whether you need new boots for your next hike or if you can get away with wearing sneakers? There are a few simple guidelines to follow on when you can get away with just wearing sneakers and when you need the protection and support of a sturdy hiking boot. First ask yourself the following questions:

Am I going hiking on an established trail?
Generally if you’re in a state or national park the trails are well maintained and even sometimes paved. If you’re heading into the backcountry, trails will be more rugged and exposed. If you’re on a paved trail you might be able to get away with simple sneakers… if you’re in the backcountry you will need boots.

How steep is the grade?
There is a difference between hiking on a flat trail in Florida where there is minimal risk of twisting an ankle and hiking up a 3000 ft rocky ascent in Colorado. Flat trails can be hiked with regular tennis shoes. Hikes in the mountains require a sturdy hiking boot that can protect your from injury and have a strong grip.

Is there a threat of snakes?
If you’re hiking in Arizona or anywhere there are rattlesnakes I highly suggest you wear a hiking boot. They cover more or your foot and high ankle without leaving much skin exposed. If you’re in a tennis shoe, a snake has a lot more area to strike.

Is there water?
Whether you’re expecting rain or might have to walk through a small creek, if there is water you will want a hiking boot. Most hiking boots have fitted with gortex or some water resistant materials. If you’re in a tennis shoe you will be walking in a soggy shoe for hours – this will result in blisters.

So take my advance – plan out your hiking trip carefully and be prepared with the appropriate footwear. Hiking boots aren’t needed for all hikes, so don’t wear them if you don’t have to.
